Authorities cancel Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony due to strong winds

The police added that winds of this strength have the ability to damage infrastructure and facilities, including the toppling of trees, poles, temporary fences, and more.

Following discussions on the subject, the torch-lighting ceremony for Israel's Independence Day was canceled due to forecasts of strong winds. 

Miri Regev's office announced that she would hold a situational assessment around 12:30 regarding the holding of the torch ceremony, at which point the minister made a decision.

The peak of the winds is expected to begin on Wednesday afternoon and last until the evening, with gusts of around 90–100 km/h moving west to east, the police said in a statement. 

The police added that winds of this strength have the ability to damage infrastructure and facilities, including the toppling of trees, poles, temporary fences, and more.

Public advice

The police advised the public to take extra caution near trees, signs, and other structures that can collapse. They also recommended securing installations, decorations, and temporary infrastructure at events and ceremonies.

The use of pyrotechnics such as fireworks is strictly prohibited, as it may cause fires, the police stressed.
