Second time in two weeks: Murder-suicide in Rehovot
The police believe that a man hit his mother on the head, causing her death, after which he jumped off a roof to his death.
An elderly woman, about 80-years-old, was found dead in her Rehovot apartment on Thursday morning, with a hit to the head. Emergency services pronounced her dead on the spot.
Her son climbed to the roof of the apartment building and threatened to jump off it.
After about two hours, with negotiation teams on site and in contact with him, he jumped to his death.
This is the second murder-suicide in Israel to take place over the past two-and-a-half weeks.
He climbed to the roof at around 7 a.m., and refused to come down. Initial suspicion is that he hit his mother, but police have opened an investigation into the whole affair. Walla reported that authorities were half-a-meter from him, where he stood behind a solar water heater.
The Rehovot municipality said it had staff on site and was in communication with all the relevant figures.
Last Monday, a man stabbed his wife to death in Bat Yam, after a loud argument could be heard from the apartment. After the act, he remained on the roof of the apartment building for hours. Negotiation teams tried to talk him down, but he eventually jumped to his death.
In Rehovot, residents are fuming. Some of them told Maariv, “How can it be that after the Bat Yam tragedy, security authorities didn't conclude that a mattress is needed [on the sidewalk of a building where someone is threatening to jump]?”
A resident of the neighborhood, Natan Salomon, echoed the sentiment to Walla: “Something isn't right here. I know him, he's a normal person, his brother prays with me.”
The residents continued to Maariv, “Here, the man sat on the roof for five hours on his own. Just like in Bat Yam, he eventually jumped to his death. This can't keep happening, when will they learn their lesson?”
A woman who lives in the building said that the victims were a “good family,” that “the man wasn't so healthy, but he loved his mother and was dedicated to her care.”
