Jerusalem Police arrested three teenagers in connection with a violent home invasion and arson attack that took place recently in the Old City, police announced on Sunday.

The suspects, 16 and residents of Jerusalem and its surroundings, are accused of breaking into the home of a local resident, setting fire to his apartment entrance, and assaulting him.

The incident occurred during Jerusalem Day celebrations. The suspects allegedly targeted the victim’s home, forced their way inside, rummaged through his kitchen, and then set the entrance of his apartment on fire using a stick and a lighter, after pouring a flammable substance. When the victim tried to flee the burning apartment, the suspects attacked him violently, causing injuries. They then fled the scene.

Surveillance operators at the district’s command center identified one of the suspects near the Western Wall area, leading to his arrest.

Further investigation by detectives revealed the identities of two additional suspects, who were arrested days later. All three were taken into custody and questioned at the police station.

Extending detention

Following a court hearing, the suspects’ detention was extended at the request of the police. Although defense attorneys filed an appeal, the District Court ruled to keep two suspects in custody while releasing the third under restrictive conditions.

Police say the investigation has yielded sufficient evidence against two of the suspects. The Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office submitted a statement of intent to file an indictment against them over the weekend. The court has extended their detention to allow the charges to be formally filed in the coming days.

“This type of violent crime will not be tolerated,” a police spokesperson said. “The Israel Police will continue to utilize every available resource to combat violence, apprehend suspects, and ensure justice is served.”
