Martin Indyk: Golan does not belong to Israel even with US recognition
A former US special Middle East envoy under Obama, Indyk joked he’s willing to wager a ‘Yarden Mount Hermon wine’ that Arab states won’t accept such a move.
He further said that, at the moment, Israel can’t give up the Golan because it has “legitimate security concerns” - but even if the US would recognize Israeli sovereignty in the Golan, no other Arab state will follow.Like it or not, the Golan Heights are Syrian territory. Israel cannot give them up now given its legitimate security concerns. But to recognize Israel’s annexation of territory that is not its own is to play with fire for partisan political purposes. No Arab state will accept it.— Martin Indyk (@Martin_Indyk) March 11, 2019

“Syria is now in no position to make that deal,” he said, “which is why I said “for now.”Five Israeli prime ministers - Rabin, Peres, Barak, Olmert and even Netanyahu - offered to give up the Golan Heights in return for peace with Syria and accompanying security arrangements. Syria is now in no position to make that deal or enforce it. Which is why I said “for now.” https://t.co/eZkle75JAt— Martin Indyk (@Martin_Indyk) March 11, 2019
