An 88-year-old woman mistakenly declared dead in Pilsen, in the Czech Republic, opened her eyes as funeral staff were placing her in a coffin, local media reported last week.

The mistake was reportedly made after the woman’s husband failed to wake her and called emergency services. A doctor later arrived and declared that the woman had passed away in her sleep.

The ambulance spokesman Martin Štěpán said, according to the Mail Online: “Our operations centre received a call in the early morning hours, during which the operator proceeded in accordance with the valid recommendations of the professional society and the methodology for situations related to the death of a patient.

“Following this procedure, the entire incident was handed over to the coroner.”

Police investigate how a live woman was declared dead

Despite a death certificate being issued and having been examined by a medical professional, the woman had not died and was later described as being in good health despite her age and previous illness.

Funeral directors called emergency services after the woman opened her eyes, and she was reportedly kept under hospital observation for some time before being released.

The husband told Blesk that “the workers transferred her to the coffin, and when they were right here in the apartment in the hallway by the door, they found out she was alive."

Police are now reportedly investigating the doctor who issued the certificate, suspecting she may have failed to provide appropriate care to a person in danger.
