Air defense systems were activated on Wednesday night in the Damascus area of Syria due to an aircraft attack, killing two people and wounding a soldier, Syrian state media said early on Thursday.

Syrian reports described echoes of explosions in the sky of the town Set Zaynab, located south of Damascus. Reports said that the Kol Habira website, affiliated with the Syrian opposition, published a video of the alleged Israeli attack.

"At around 23:40 PM local time on Wednesday, the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the Golan Heights towards a number of sites in the southern region and our air defences intercepted the enemy's missiles," it said, citing a military source.

Previous strikes on Damascus

Israel has been carrying out strikes against Iran-linked targets in Syria for years but has ramped up such raids since the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israeli territory.
