National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israel Police Commissioner Daniel Levi had a public confrontation at the end of a weapons display on Wednesday.
When answering journalists’ questions, Levi stated that he intends to act in accordance with the rulings of the court.
“I say this here and in every conversation with police officers – how can there be a police commissioner leading the most central law enforcement organization in Israel who will not enforce the law and not listen to the rulings of the court?”
Ben-Gvir, who attempted to interrupt him, shouted at him, “He’s provoking you,” before attempting to turn the conversation in a different direction.
“Let me finish,” the commissioner responded firmly before continuing.
“I say this here in public – I declare it here, I have declared this dozens of times – me and all the police officers of the Israel Police will protect democracy, fight for democracy, and defend democracy until the last drop of blood. If someone thinks otherwise, they are wrong.”
Recent court ruling on Ronen Bar
On Tuesday, the High Court of Justice heard petitions for and against the firing of Ronen Bar, ultimately freezing the firing.
The interim order means that Bar will stay in his position until April 20. Chief Justice Isaac Amit noted that if the sides fail to reach an agreement, the court will issue a decision.
Levi was appointed last August
Levi was appointed as police commissioner last August after being unanimously approved by the government.
“Under my command, the Israel Police will work to strengthen the governance and sovereignty of the state, fight anyone who tries to hurt and disrupt the rule of law, and make sure the law is enforced for every citizen equally while maintaining professionalism, determination, integrity, and public service,” Levi said.
“Danny is coming in with a Zionist and Jewish agenda, and he will lead the police in accordance with the policy I have set for him,” said Ben-Gvir.
