Iran FM Abbas Araghchi, China's ambassador discuss 25-year deal
The two officials spoke about developing relations and mutual understanding in implementing the agreement, which is several years old.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and China ambassador to Iran Cong Peiwu discussed the importance of the Iran-China 25-year agreement. The two officials spoke about developing relations and mutual understanding in implementing the agreement, which is several years old.
The goal of Iran is to work more closely with China and Russia. This is part of its drive for a new world order in which it works with non-Western countries to not need to rely on the West. As Iran also faces the possibility of arguments over its nuclear program with the West, it will need China and Russia.
Iranian state media IRNA noted that Iran’s “Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Islamic Republic of Iran Cong Peiwu have emphasized the development of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their strong commitment to implementing the 25-year cooperation agreement between Iran and China.”
Discussions come ahead of Iran's visit to China
The discussion comes ahead of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to China.“Araghchi hailed China’s constructive position on regional and international developments and emphasized strengthening consultations to counter unilateral and bullying approaches in the international arena,” the report said.
According to the report, the two sides also discussed the nuclear issue. This is important because Iran and the US are holding a sixth round of talks on Sunday. Iran will need China’s support.
This could be a key time in Russia-China-Iran ties. If the US and Iran can agree to a deal, then tensions may be reduced. If not, then China and Russia may need to step up to help Iran.
