The IDF told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday that it had confirmed that the body that was located in an underground complex beneath the European Hospital near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza was former Hamas military leader Mohammed Sinwar.

Initially, the body was found in a tunnel along with at least 10 other bodies of terrorists. It was later brought to Israel for identification.

Sinwar was killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 13 in Khan Yunis.

The military campaign, which was conducted jointly with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), targeted senior Hamas figures operating in an underground command and control center.

IDF killing of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar in Gaza hospital

There is some speculation that back in May, the IDF may have used a bunker buster bomb in its attempted attack against Sinwar, defense sources told the Post.

Following that initial attack, the army reportedly struck the area where Sinwar was allegedly located a second time, with the objective of preventing the evacuation of casualties, KAN News reported.

The IDF previously said that the airstrike was carried out using extensive intelligence measures aimed at preventing civilian casualties. Although the targeted command center was located beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, hospital operations were not disrupted.
