Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the day Golda Meir became prime minister of the State of Israel. She was the first and only woman to serve in this role.
Meir was born on May 3, 1888 in Ukraine. She lived much of her young life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before becoming an active Zionist and moving to the Land of Israel.
She was the country’s fourth prime minister and the world’s third woman with that title.
She died in the holy city of Jerusalem on December 8, 1978.
Today, Meir is widely quoted as a leader and visionary.
Here are five of her best mantras:
* “Authority poisons everybody who takes authority on himself.”

* “Don’t be humble...you’re not that great.”

* “Not being beautiful was the true blessing. Not being beautiful forced me to develop my inner resources. The pretty girl has a handicap to overcome.”

* “I can honestly say that I was never affected by the question of the success of an undertaking. If I felt it was the right thing to do, I was for it regardless of the possible outcome.”
