Scientists witness birth of a galaxy cluster in early universe - study

Galaxy clusters are some of the largest objects in the universe, but how are they formed? ESO and ALMA studied the Spiderweb protocluster and found proof it is turning into a cluster.

This image shows the protocluster around the Spiderweb galaxy at a time when the Universe was only 3 billion years old. Most of the mass in the protocluster does not reside in the galaxies that can be seen in the center of the image, but the gas.
