Russia's President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Syria's interim leader Ahmed al-Shara'a, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.
The Syrian presidency added that Putin invited Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani to visit Moscow in the coming months.
Russia was a chief backer of Bashar al-Assad, the former president who was toppled by Shara'a in December, and is hoping to retain the use of its naval and air bases in Syria.
Assad fled to Moscow.
