A haredi protest denouncing plans to draft community members into IDF service blocked Jerusalem's Shmuel Hanavi Street on Thursday afternoon.
Approximately 1,500 protesters were in attendance, according to Kan News.
Israel Police announced that the protest erupted into violence, with "dozens of protesters disrupting public order by blocking the road, damaging buses, throwing stones, tossing 'objects,' and shouting abusive slogans at police officers." These slogans included "Zionist" and "Nazis," as well as other terms viewed as insults by the haredi sector of society.
One such object thrown at the police was eggs, according to Kan News.
The police added that one officer suffered from a stone thrown by a protester, shattering his helmet visor.
This, in turn, led to police officers ordering the protesters to disperse, which led to police officers forcefully moving protesters who were blocking the road to the sidewalk.
At least six police officers were injured, and two protesters were arrested.
An unspecified number of firefighters were also injured as protesters threw cans and other objects as the firefighters attempted to put out the fire that the protesters had lit in the middle of the street.
