US formally accepts luxury jet from Qatar

The United States has formally accepted a luxury jet presented as a gift to President Donald Trump by Qatar during his visit to the country last week, reports said on Tuesday.

The Boeing 746 jet is worth an estimated $400 million.

The Air Force has been asked to determine a way to rapidly upgrade it so it can be used as a new Air Force One, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing a defense department spokesman, adding that the Air Force will awarded a contract for the refurbishment.

Legal experts have questioned the scope of laws relating to gifts from foreign governments that aim to thwart corruption and improper influence. Democrats have also sought to block the handover.

Qatar has dismissed concerns about the aircraft deal. Trump has also shrugged off ethical concerns, saying it would be "stupid" not to accept the jet.
