Ukraine has agreed to accept a US proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire and to take steps toward restoring a durable peace after Russia's invasion, according to a joint US-Ukraine statement on Tuesday.
The two sides, meeting in Saudi Arabia, also agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources, the statement said.
The US State Department also said that the US would 'immediately' resume intelligence sharing and military assistance with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The State Department release said that the US would reiterate the necessity for reciprocity to Russia.
"The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace," the statement said.
Additionally, the press release said that Kyiv and Washington representatives discussed "the importance of humanitarian relief efforts as part of the peace process, particularly during the above-mentioned ceasefire, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly transferred Ukrainian children. "
'Positive and productive talks'
US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the meeting in Jeddah was a good step towards ending the violence in Ukraine.
"The Ukrainian delegation today made something very clear: that they share President Trump’s vision for peace, they share his determination to end the fighting, to end the killing, to end the tragic meat grinder of people and national treasure that’s happening on the front in Ukraine – number one," Waltz said. "Number two, they made concrete steps and concrete proposals not only accepting our proposal for a full ceasefire"
"We’ll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they’ll say yes to peace. The ball is now in their court," Rubio said. "Our hope is that the Russians will say yes, so the shooting will stop, the killing will stop, the dying will stop, and the talks can begin about how to end this war permanently in a way that’s acceptable and enduring for both sides."
The two senior American officials said that Tuesday's talks in Riyadh were proof that Trump could instill peace worldwide.
"President Trump is a President who wants to be a president of peace," said Rubio. "His goal in this entire process has been to bring about an end to this war. It’s a terrible war, a costly war, a bloody war, and his number one interest is ending this war once and for all."
Ukranian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that the talks in Jedah proved that Kyiv 'is not obstacle' to restoring peace between the warring nations.
Negotiations lasted for nearly nine hours, Saudi channel Al-Hadath said.
'We see it a positive'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his country was ready to take the step towards a total ceasefire, and that he believed it was a step in the right direction.
"Ukraine accepts this proposal; we see it as positive and are ready to take this step," he said in his daily address on Telegram. "The United States must convince Russia to do the same.
"That is, we agree, and if the "Russians" agree, then at that moment, the silence will take effect."
He also said that his team's proposals for a ceasefires in the sky and at sea, as well as confidence building measures for ongoing diplomacy with Moscow were accepted by the American team.
"Our Ukrainian proposal for this meeting with the Americans included three points: silence in the sky—missiles, bombs, long-range drones—silence at sea, and real confidence-building measures in this situation where diplomacy is ongoing, primarily the release of prisoners. The American side understands our arguments and accepts our proposals," he said.
Notably, he thanked President Trump for the "constructive nature" of the discussions. He also expressed his relief that the US would restore its intelligence sharing with Ukraine as well as military aid to Kyiv.
Trump later said that he would be willing to invite Zelensky back to the White House, and that he hopes Russia will agree to the ceasefire plan.
He said that US officials would meet with Russian officials either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Europe praises steps forward
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ceasefire in a post on X.
"The ball is now clearly in Russia's court," he said in a statement.
"France and its partners remain committed to a solid and lasting peace, backed by robust security guarantees for Ukraine," he added.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also said that it was now up to Moscow to sign the deal.
"As both American and Ukrainian delegations have said, the ball is now in the Russian court," Starmer said in a statement, congratulating both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump for the "remarkable breakthrough."
Starmer said he would use a meeting of world leaders that Britain is convening on Saturday to discuss next steps.
"We are ready to help bring an end to this war in a just and permanent way that allows Ukraine to enjoy its freedom," he said.
