The US reportedly published a new policy regarding the Syrian government that includes easing sanctions on the country, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
The new US policy addresses the Syrian government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and includes conditions such as barring Palestinian terrorists from its territory and expelling them in exchange for sanctions being eased in a restricted manner, the WSJ wrote, citing US officials.
The Syrian government would also be required to act with regard to its chemical weapons cache, the report noted.
“The United States currently does not recognize any entity as the government of Syria,” a State Department spokesperson was cited as saying in the report, adding, “Syria’s interim authorities should fully renounce and suppress terrorism.”
US reportedly looks to reduce troops in Syria
Earlier this week, it was reported that the US military would halve the number of troops deployed in Syria.
The United States has recently sent aircraft, including B-2 bombers, warships, and air defense systems, to reinforce the Middle East.
