Over 100 Democrats rejected a Republican resolution to condemn the antisemitic terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, on June 1. The resolution, introduced by Congressman Gabe Evans, nevertheless passed in the House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote on Monday.

The resolution called for three things: condemnation of Mohamed Soliman and his “antisemitic terrorist attack,” free and open communication between state and local law enforcement as an essential part of preventing terrorist attacks, and the expression of gratitude to law enforcement officers for their work in ensuring safety.

Despite opposition, the resolution passed with a 280-113 split, with all ‘no’ votes coming from Democrats. The Democrats largely took issue with the wording of the resolution, including the call for “gratitude” to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as a passage that referred to “Free Palestine” as an “antisemitic slogan.” The latter part was removed prior to the vote.

Democrat Congressman Hakeem Jeffries told Axios that the resolution was “not serious” and “a joke,” as well as saying, “Gabe Evans is a joke.”

Evans, for Colorado’s 8th District, introduced the resolution on June 6 with the aim of “formally denouncing the attack and expressing appreciation to law enforcement, including ICE, for their role in keeping Americans safe.”

“The terrorist attack in Boulder is another example of why Colorado’s sanctuary states are dangerous to the safety and well-being of Americans,” said Evans. “Local law enforcement must be able to work with federal immigration authorities to keep Coloradans safe, and we must condemn all acts of antisemitism at every opportunity, not just after attacks like this.”

Evans added that as “a former police officer and Army veteran of the Global War on Terror, I know how Colorado’s radical leftist leaders and laws prioritize illegal immigrants over public safety, allowing antisemitic terrorists like Mohammed Sabry Soliman to strike.”

He said on Monday that the passing of the resolution is key to preventing future such attacks.

Congressman Jeff Crank of Colorado’s 5th District added that he would not “sit idly by as our friends are attacked for their religious and political beliefs.”

He said the Boulder attack was something that “could have been prevented.” According to him, Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations were aware that the attacker – Soliman – was in the US illegally when he failed a background check to buy a gun, “yet did nothing to notify ICE.”

“Colorado state lawmakers need to do better,” said Crank.

Congressman Jeff Hurd and Congresswoman Lauren Boebert also condemned “the cowardly and reprehensible act of antisemitic terrorism” and extended prayers to Colorado’s Jewish community.

Blaming the Biden administration

Hurd blamed the Democrats, especially the Biden administration, for “failed immigration policies and open borders.”

“This abhorrent act of targeted terrorism committed by a criminal illegal alien is a perfect representation of all that went wrong under the Biden Administration,” said Boebert.

“I stand with my Colorado Republican colleagues in condemning this terrible, targeted act of terror, supporting the Jewish community in this time of fear and uncertainty, and ensuring we will work with the Trump Administration to remove criminal aliens and terrorists like Mohammed Sabry Soliman from our country.”

However, Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman, who is Jewish, voted against the resolution, telling the House that it simply aimed to “score political points.” Jeffries parroted Goldman’s sentiments, telling reporters that “[Evans] is not seriously concerned with combating antisemitism in America. [Antisemitism] shouldn’t be weaponized politically.”
