Police arrest 19-year-old linked to November shooting at Yeshiva Gedola of Montreal, as Jewish groups call for strong sentencing to deter rising antisemitic violence since October 7.
Videos of the protest posted to TikTok showed protesters shooting off fireworks above them while waving Palestinian flags.
CBC cited the police as saying that one incendiary device was found at the scene. Witnesses told police that they saw a suspect fleeing the scene.
Second Cup - a Montreal coffee chain - said it was "terminating their franchise agreement" after it found that its franchisee made "hateful remarks and gestures."
The protest reportedly took up all 12 floors of the main Concordia building, and "Free Gaza" was spray painted on lockers.
The Yeshiva Gedolah in Montreal was the target of two shootings in November 2023, the first on November 9 and the second on November 12.
"Death to Israel, Death to Jews,” was also shouted in Arabic by a protester, according to a video posted by The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs on Tuesday.
“The government you represent failed to provide the most basic protection to its citizens, and it has lost the faith of the majority of Israelis," Dan Brotman wrote to the Israeli Consul General.
This marks the third time in less than a week that a Jewish school in Montreal was hit amid heightened tensions over the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The police announced they will continue their inquiry, and revealed that a woman has been arrested in connection to violence at Concordia University.
