For an actual Palestinian state to come into existence and be more than just a name on a placard identifying a speaker at the UN General Assembly, Israel will need to acquiesce.
The SDS, the largest opposition party, argued it was not the right time to recognize an independent Palestinian state and that the move would only award the "terrorist organisation Hamas".
"This is the message of peace," said Prime Minister Robert Golob.
The announcement came as Ireland, Spain, and several other European Union member states are reportedly considering recognizing a Palestinian state on May 21.
A World Jewish Congress delegation visited Slovenia to address rising antisemitism. They met with officials, faced challenges, and emphasized the right to Jewish pride and safety.
"We want to stop the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and help kickstart a political peace process leading to the realization of the two-state solution as early as possible," a spokeswoman said.
Since 1988, 139 out of 193 United Nations member states have recognized Palestinian statehood.
“Slovenia played very well and deserved the win,” Israel head coach Ariel Beit Halachmi said.
